How to Make a Caipirinha

What is a Caipirinha?

If you are a fan of cocktails, and have not tried a Caipirinha, then you are really missing out! Here are a few things to know before deciding to make your own Caipirinha at home.

A Caipirinha is a cocktail made to make you feel like you are sitting on the beach in Rio. It is the national drink of Brazil and obviously very popular in the Dominican Republic. It is meant to be a citrus flavored drink that is both a little sour and a little sweet.
The spirit used for the base is called Cachaça. It is made from sugarcane juice that is then fermented. This is a Brazilian spirit that is comparable to rum.

Some people compare this drink to a margarita because it is made with lime, a sweetener, and spirits. It is often associated with tropical regions, and is typically served on the rocks. Before you create your drink, know that this one is considered a strong alcoholic drink.

How to Make Caipirinha

You will need the following ingredients:
  • A half of a lime cut into wedgeslime
  • 2 tsp. of sugar

cahcaca bottle

Optional, but suggested, ingredients:

  • A single lime wheel to use as a garnish

  • A Double Old Fashioned Glass

  • Muddler

When you have acquired all of your ingredients, here is how to make Caipirinha.

1. Begin by muddling the sugar and lime together in the Double Old Fashioned Glass. This means that you will need to press the ingredients against the side of the glass using the muddler. Doing this will actually release the flavors from the ingredients so that they mix better with the alcohol.

2. Once you have muddled your ingredients, you will fill the glass with ice. Pour the Cachaça over the ice until the glass is filled.

3. Once everything is in the glass, you will need to stir everything together. This should be a fairly quick stirring.

4. Finish the drink by garnishing the glass with the lime wheel. While this drink sound extremely extravagant, it has very few steps in creating it.

The next time that you are holding some kind of get together with friends, this would be a great drink to serve. You can show off your knowledge and be a little fancy for your guests without a ridiculous amount of work. So, it’s time to go to Brazil for the night with this simple, but delicious drink!
